Vibration Fault Spectrum Simulator

Every mechanical fault leaves its own trace in the spectrum. Choose a fault, change severity and speed; the time waveform and spectrum update instantly. An idealised model for training.

These tools are intended for preliminary assessment and training. Decisions on critical equipment should be based on on-site measurement and expert evaluation.

How to use

  1. Choose a fault type.

  2. Increase severity and watch the signature grow.

  3. Change speed: the peaks stay put on the order (X) axis, which is typical of speed-related faults.

Theory & formulas

The spectrum axis is in orders (multiples of running speed): 1X is shaft speed, 2X twice that. Speed-related faults stay at fixed positions on the order axis.

The model uses BPFO ≈ 3.58X (a 9-ball 6205-type bearing) and a 23-tooth pinion (GMF = 23X).

Overall level is the root sum of squares of the spectral components: Vrms = √(Σ vi²).

Frequently asked questions

How do you tell unbalance from misalignment in the spectrum?

Unbalance produces a dominant radial 1X with low axial vibration. Misalignment usually shows a clear 2X, high axial vibration and roughly 180° phase difference across the coupling.
