Why on site instead of a balancing machine?

A rotor balanced in the workshop can vibrate again once installed, because of couplings, pulleys and bearing clearances. Field balancing corrects the machine in its own bearings at operating speed.

The rotor is not removed, so cranes, transport and workshop queues disappear. A single-plane fan is usually back in service the same day.

We confirm the source of vibration before balancing. If the problem is misalignment, looseness or a bearing, the report says so plainly.

    Common questions

If your question is not here, use the contact form or ask Apex Assistant at the bottom right.

    What is field balancing?

Field balancing is the dynamic balancing of a rotor in place — in its own bearings and at operating speed — without removing it. A portable vibration analyser and a phase reference sensor measure the amplitude and angle of the unbalance, and a correction weight is calculated and added to (or removed from) the correction plane.

Which equipment can be field balanced?

Fans and blowers, pumps, electric motors, crushers, mills, separators, decanters, compressors, turbine and generator rotors, spindles and pulleys — practically any rotating machine with an accessible correction plane.

How long does field balancing take?

A typical single-plane fan balance is usually completed within a few hours, depending on access and safe stop/start conditions. For two-plane balancing and large rotors the duration becomes clear after the baseline measurement.

How do you know the vibration is caused by unbalance?

Unbalance appears as a dominant 1X (running speed) component, high in the radial direction and with a stable phase. Misalignment, mechanical looseness, resonance and bearing defects produce different signatures; we separate them before balancing to avoid the wrong fix.

What is the difference between predictive and preventive maintenance?

Preventive maintenance follows a calendar and replaces parts even when they are still healthy. Predictive maintenance monitors actual condition data — vibration, temperature, ultrasound, oil — and schedules intervention when it is really needed, reducing both unplanned downtime and unnecessary part replacements.

Which standards do your reports follow?

Balance quality is reported against ISO 21940-11 (formerly ISO 1940-1) grades and machine vibration severity against the ISO 20816 / ISO 10816 evaluation zones. Where the customer or manufacturer specifies limits, those take precedence.
